This glossary provides definitions for common terms used by the Port Alberni Association for Community Living (PAACL) to help our community better understand our programs and services.

Community Integration: Programs and services designed to support adults with intellectual disabilities as they engage in community life through social, recreational, and vocational activities.

Customized Employment: A personalized approach to job placement that matches the specific skills and interests of an individual with the unique needs of a local employer.

FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder): A diagnostic term used to describe the impacts on the brain and body of individuals who were prenatally exposed to alcohol.

Home Share: A residential option where an adult with a developmental disability shares a home with a person or family who provides support, companionship, and a safe living environment.

Inclusion: The fundamental principle that all people, regardless of their abilities, have the right to be respected and valued as full participants in every aspect of their community.

Intellectual Disability: A term used to describe significant limitations in both intellectual functioning and adaptive behaviour, which impacts everyday social and practical skills.

L.I.F.E.-Based Services: Support programs that focus on Learning, Inclusion, Friendship, and Employment to help individuals lead fulfilling lives alongside their neighbours.

PAACL: The Port Alberni Association for Community Living, a non-profit organization that has supported individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families for over 65 years.

Person-Centred Planning: A collaborative process used to help individuals with disabilities plan for their future based on their unique strengths, goals, and personal preferences.

Semi-Independent Living (SIL): A program that provides periodic support to individuals who live in their own homes but require some assistance with daily tasks or navigating the community.

Supported Child Development: A service that assists families and child care centres to include children with extra support needs in regular community settings and programs.

Thrive (FASD Keyworker Program): A specialized service that provides support, education, and advocacy for children and youth with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and their families.
