Home sharing is a residential option in which an adult with intellectual disabilities shares a home with someone who is contracted to provide ongoing support. Home sharing includes a wide variety of arrangements based on the individuals needs. Services are regularly reviewed and appropriately adjusted to meet the evolving needs of the individual. Individuals have the right to live in a safe environment and have the opportunity for personal growth and skill development. Support is provided in a manner that respects the individual’s right to make choices, lead planning and direct service wherever possible.
Aside from the continual need for Home Shares, there is currently an urgent, additional need for Specialized Home Shares; Caregivers that have experience with behavior support planning and do not have indoor pets or young children.
Home sharing is an opportunity for families to open up their home and experiences through the dynamics of family life. Supported individuals have the chance to learn, grow and develop new relationships with family and friends. It is a unique setting that often sees not only the supported individual personally grow, but also everyone in the family as well.
The Home sharing process involves making sure that family and supported individuals are a good match. Some factors that the program considers before a placement is made are shared interests, experience, time commitment and the family dynamics.
